Ladies 1st XI
The Kelburne Ladies 1st XI play in the Subway Women’s National League Division 1, the country’s top league. Despite losing many players last season, the team rallied together to finish a very creditable 5th, and are aiming for a higher placing this season.
The last few seasons have been the most successful in the history of the Ladies 1st XI. The girls won promotion to the top flight for the first time in 2004, under the guidance of coach Helen Paxton. In a few short seasons, following Susan Gilmour’s arrival as club coach, they progressed from a team aiming to avoid relegation, to a team striving for a place in European competition. In 2010, the girls made history by becoming the first Kelburne Ladies team to represent Scotland at the EuroHockey Club Trophy in Rome. 2010 also saw the team lift the Scottish President’s Cup.
Current Ladies 1st XI captain is Laura Carlton (nee Wrightson). Laura has made 50 appearances in the senior Scottish squad, and is one of the most successful players produced by Kelburne Hockey club. Laura has been a member of Kelburne since she was 5 years old, starting off as a Jockey Hockey player, before moving up through the ranks to where she is today.
Laura is not the only internationalist boasted by the Ladies 1st XI. Goalkeeper Cath Rae has also made several appearances in the senior Scottish squad, and several others have represented Scotland at U21, U18 and U16 levels.
