Kelburne 3rd XI 5 – Kelburne 4thXI - 2 The Kelburne 3s looked to continue their impressive form from last week after thoroughly beating Hellensburgh the week before. The game started with the 3s camped in the 4s half playing pass and moving and creating lots of chances but the 4s defence and goal keeper stood strong after good shots on goal from various players. However, eventually the 3s made a breakthrough via a well worked short corner. The corner was pushed out by Billy Anderson to Jason Cairns who lined up to drag flick it but instead passed it back to Billy who was there to push the ball into the goal. The game continued to be a dominate performance from the 3s and Billy then got his 2nd of the game after good work from Andy Bremner to win the short corner. However, this time Bremner’s shot on goal was saved by the goalie but the ball bounced kindly for Anderson and calmly fired the ball home to put the 3s two up. The rest of the half again continued to be played in the 4s half, but the 4s were very dangerous on the break and almost pulled a goal back before half time following a fast counter attack, fortunately Johnny Barlow was able to keep out Allan ‘Alfy' Gillies’ powerful shot and deflect it wide. The 2nd half started much like the first with the 4s defending for their life and relying on counter attacks, and it was through this way that they pulled a somewhat controversial goal back. From a 3s shot on goal, to a 4s player firing a ball downfield for ‘Alfy’ to pick up and fire a low shot past Barlow. The 3s were furious for 2 reasons, the ball could have been classed as dangerous as it was at head height and there was a suggestion that the shot was taken outside the ‘D’. Nonetheless, the goal stood. This only fired the 3s up and quickly restored their two goal cushion after a low shot from Bremner hit the post and rolled across the line but Ryan Edgar was there to steer the ball home. The 4th goal was a fantastic team goal down the right, just seconds after a 4s counter attack which David ‘Goozer’ McGhee intercepted and quickly passed to Alan Ralph who found Neil McIntyre. He held the ball up and laid it off to JG Shepherd who passed to Bremner on the baseline. He fired a low cross into the ‘D’ where McIntyre was there to sweep the ball home after continuing his run. A quick reply by the 4s meant that Dean Kennedy scored to give the 4s hope of a comeback but they were quickly extinguished after a great solo goal from Jason Cairns, who skilfully beat four players and still had the composure and energy to hit the ball into the bottom corner. A great performance following last weeks game. The game ended 5-2. Next week the 3s travel to Auchenhowie to play Western 4s and hopefully repay the compliment following a 4-0 loss at Bellahouston earlier in the season. A special mention goes to ‘Goozer’ who has represented Kelburne for many years and was a vital part of the clubs history and their European success stories. He has unfortunately had to retire due to injury but gave a magnificent performance in his last game and Kelburne Derby. Match report by JG Shepherd |
